Check out this video of 3rd graders coding their ozobot to visit three different stations on the Ozobot factory floor.
It was a busy week in the media center! We celebrated Hour of Code week by doing a lot of coding activities. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders wrote codes for their Ozobots. 4th played coding games on the computers and 5th learned about binary code. This is just the beginning of our coding unit ... lots more fun to come!
4th graders learn about the Makey Makey from another student. Maybe we'll see some cool projects in the future!
2nd and 3rd graders participated in a straw tower design challenge. Using only straws and 3 feet of masking tape, they had to construct a tower that could hold the weight of a tennis ball for at least 15 seconds. I saw a lot of great team work, problem solving, and GRIT as they worked through the Engineering and Design Process.
These are turning out so cute! I just had to share more.
4th and 5th graders created paper circuits using copper tape, a coin cell battery, and an LED. Love how creative they were with their drawings!
3rd Graders learned about simple circuits by adding a power source and an LED to Play Dough. Play Dough conducts electricity! To make fun creations, they added modeling clay as an insulator to keep the Play Dough from touching.
1st Graders chose from 3 exploratory stations. At the Zoob Animals station they created animals while thinking about how animals have unique characteristics to move, eat, and protect themselves. At the mosaic coloring station they looked for familiar shapes and found patters in the designs. They engineered marble mazes at the LEGO station and discovered that pathways had to be wide enough for the marble to roll. Click HERE to see a video of the 1st grade stations. Students in Mrs. Avery's class painted and chose the items to represent each letter! LED light strips line the back and can be turned on and off with a switch.
Due to an assembly in the media center this Friday, 1st and 4th grade rotations moved to the art room.
1st graders drew color codes for the Ozobot to read. The tornado and zigzag codes were a popular move! A group of 4th graders who already had Ozobot experience, used their knowledge of Ozo codes to create a path for their Ozobot to visit the regions of California. 2nd graders learned about the inner workings of a computer by deoncstucting old ones. They identified certain parts (Motherboard, CPU, hard drive, ribbon cables, disc drive, etc.) and sorted them into tubs.
4th graders in Mrs. Gardner's class wrote programs to get their Ozobot through the course. It was challenging! The Ozobots didn't always roll straight. They had to make adjustments to their code to compensate.
Click HERE to see an Ozobot in action! Creating Ozobot races, programming Dash to spell vocabulary words, making fortune tellers to practice using a thesaurus, and finishing our STEAM letters ... it was a busy Wednesday in the Media Center!
Click HERE to see the beginning of a program written to spell "impossible." 2nd Graders filled their footprint with information that is OK to share in a multi-player game where they can communicate with other kids. It's OK to share hobbies and favorites, but never your full name, address, school name, and birthday! Do not leave a "digital trail" for a stranger to find you.
5th graders used Google Slides to show what is already in their Digital Footprint. What websites do they visit frequently? Do they have a username or screen name that protects their identity? Are they using the Internet to communicate respectfully? We had another busy week in the media center! Mrs. Gardner's class came in for more coding with Ozobots and Dash and Dot. 3rd-5th graders began typing practice. 1st graders practiced internet safety by being aware of advertisements on ABCya. 4th graders explored Snap Circuits and even turned the Flying Saucer into a spinning art disc. We introduced a mosaic coloring station in the library too!
Check out the spin art HERE! It's been a busy week in the media center! Mrs. Gardner's class came in for some explorations in coding. Some kids worked on their Code.org curriculum, some learned to use color codes with the Ozobots, and others helped us learn how to use our new Dash and Dot robots! During rotations, a few students in Mrs. Avery's class helped paint our new STEAM letters for our Makerspace. We also tested our new puzzle center during library time and it was a huge hit! Mrs. Zasadny created a LEGO build project where kids had to put the Dewey Decimal numbers in order ... love the creative ways they chose to build.
The older, small computer lab is being replaced with a Makerspace! Starting in November, students will spend part of their computer lab rotation in the Makerspace working on various challenges and projects.
